Nevada Democrats' Culture Of Corruption Defined Their Party In 2023
LAS VEGAS - This year, Nevada political headlines were dominated by news of unprecedented ethics scandals by Democrat leaders in our state.
From a list that includes the Speaker of the State Assembly to the state's Attorney General, numerous Nevada Democrats were found to have engaged in a culture of corruption that included funneling taxpayer money to organizations they had ties to, failing to disclose blatant conflicts of interest, and other unethical behavior.
Here are just a few examples of the reporting Nevada journalists did to expose this corruption in 2023:
- The Las Vegas Review-Journal revealed that Assemblywoman Michelle Gorelow voted to funnel $250,000 in taxpayer funds to an organization just weeks before the same organization hired her. She was forced to end her candidacy for re-election in the wake of the scandal.
- Assemblyman Cameron "C.H." Miller voted to give $100,000 in taxpayer funds to an organization that he was president and CEO of and failed to fully disclose his relationship. He later resigned amid scandal.
- The Nevada Independent reported that both Assemblywomen Shea Backus and Gorelow had ties to an organization that defrauded the state.
- State Senator Dina Neal is facing multiple ethics scandals.
- Assembly Speaker Steve Yeager reportedly failed to disclose his conflict of interest for a bill that benefited his own law firm.
- Senate Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro put forward legislation to benefit a union client of her unregistered lobbyist husband.
- Attorney General Aaron Ford found himself facing controversy after CBS Reno reported that his former law firm made at least $65 million from attorney fees from working with his office, raising concerns of a conflict of interest.
- Assemblywoman Bea Duran announced she would not seek re-election after it was revealed that an organization she was associated with received taxpayer funds.
- Senator Marilyn Dondero Loop scrubbed her website to remove mentions of an organization she was tied to after the Las Vegas Review-Journal inquired about how they received taxpayer funds from the Christmas Tree Bills.
"Nevada Democrats have defined themselves by their lack of respect for any basic standard of ethics," said Better Nevada PAC spokesman John Burke. "It's clear that they care only about advancing their own interests, not those of the people who elected them. Remember their names and vote them out in 2024."
