* Republican Jim Marchant, who has lost all three of his last races, has announced for the Nevada U.S. Senate race. If he stays in (he shouldn’t), he’ll lose his fourth – either in the primary or in the general.
* Probably in the primary if, as reported, Sam Brown – who credibly ran for the Senate last year but lost in the primary to Adam Laxalt – jumps into the race. Which appears to be all but inevitable.
* Politico reports today that Brown has met with National Republican Senatorial Committee Chair Steve Daines who told the news site that “many Republicans are already signaling a preference for Sam Brown, a decorated veteran, over Marchant.”
* The article says Brown is “seriously” considering the race. Donors are being lined up. Campaign team being put together. Just add water.
* Brown raised millions and ran a respectable race against Laxalt. After the primary, he immediately backed Laxalt in the general and actively campaigned for him. A good party soldier - which won’t be forgotten by the movers-and-shakers in both Nevada and DC.
* So don’t throw away your Sam Brown for Senate baseball caps.
* Las Vegas Review-Journal columnist Victor Joecks continues sniping at Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo over school choice. Took another swing at him yesterday following the announcement that Texas Gov. Abbott had threatened to veto a “watered-down” school choice bill.
* Problem is, Victor doesn’t understand or is intentionally ignoring political reality for some reason.
* Abbott is a Republican governor with a Republican State Senate and a Republican State House. Lombardo is a Republican governor with a Democrat State Senate and Democrat State Assembly.
* We’re talking apples and oranges here.
* And for the record, all the major players in the school choice movement in Nevada are backing Lombardo up. They understand the politics. Victor doesn’t. Or doesn’t want to.
* He thinks he’s helping with his constant nipping at the governor’s heels over strategy and tactics. He’s actually undermining the entire movement. Why? Inquiring minds wanna know.
* As the Nevada Bar Association begins an investigation into Clark County Commissioner Justin Jones over texts he deleted for which a judge essentially called him a liar, expect the Commission to propose a censure motion at their next meeting.
* The deleted text messages related to a land development controversy out at Red Rock that Jones opposed. The developer has sued the county over the obstruction.
* And there’s a lot at stake. As the LVRJ noted in an editorial today, “the liability of Clark County taxpayers could top $1 billion.”
* Jones should resign. But he won’t…not without a LOT of pressure. Keep the heat turned up.
FAMOUS LAST WORDS
“We have an idea of how to end racial discrimination in hiring, housing, college admissions, loan applications, mortgages, and so on. To create a truly color-blind society, make it illegal for any government agency to ask about a person’s race and ethnicity. This is one instance where ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ could really work.” – Stephen Moore
