* Republicans are proud to announce the first (to the best of my knowledge) declared candidate for Nevada’s 3rd congressional district to take on Democrat incumbent Rep. Susie Lee in 2024.

* In tweeting about the announcement, Nevada Republican National Committeewoman Sigal Chattah wrote:

“What a great candidate! I love the honesty and raw humanity of hard working Nevadans who strive to make a difference!”

* The candidate is a former Nevada state senator who ran in 2010 on a “family values” platform.

* She resigned mid-term after getting caught cheating on her then-husband.

* She went through a very messy divorce before fleeing the state with her paramour/now-husband, a golf pro, to Alaska.

* On the way out the door, she complained about “a handful of reckless bloggers with personal agendas of salacious, unfounded personal attacks on me.” Gee, I wonder who she was talking about? (click here).

* She then entered Maxim magazine’s “Hot 100” contest and did a racy photo spread, though she ultimately didn’t win the contest.

* She and her new husband moved back to Nevada after a few years and got back into Nevada politics; she as an unsuccessful candidate for state senate (2018); he as an unsuccessful candidate the Clark County school board (2020).

* Her teen daughter murdered her ex-husband, who was also the daughter’s natural father. He was stabbed over 70 times before the daughter and her boyfriend dismembered his body and burned it in their garage.

* But I’m sure none of this will come up in a congressional campaign for one of the most competitive congressional seats in the country.

* I’m talking about, of course, Elizabeth Halseth-Helgelien.

* Halseth-Helgelien’s campaign is being run by controversial political consultants Rory McShane and Woody Johnston.

* Another GOP candidate said to be seriously mulling a run for CD3 is Drew Johnson, who unsuccessfully ran for the Clark County Commission last year.

* Closing thought…

* Why isn’t the Nevada Republican Party putting on a full-court press with non-partisan voters to re-register with the GOP so they can vote in the presidential primary a year from now when it’s likely Donald Trump (who many indies despise) and Ron DeSantis will be slugging it out?

FAMOUS LAST WORDS

“Nevadans deserve to be represented by someone, like me, who has a history of delivering on the promises I make. I never had a taste for politics.” – Elizabeth Halseth-Helgelien, Nevada Globe, 3/8/23
